Signature size limits (View original topic)

It's been a long time coming, but now that the new forum software is installed we have the option to set a signature size limit.

It's not something I really want to do, but the size of signatures has been steadily growing, to the point that some are now ridiculously large.
While it's fine for people with huge monitors, they break the width of the site at lower resolutions and really make threads harder to follow when the sigs are larger than the posts.

So the new signature limits are as follows:

  • Your signature can be 5 lines long, and can contain up to 5 URLs.
  • You are allowed one image, which must be no larger than 600 x 125 pixels.

I have specifically chosen those dimensions so the forums still render at the correct width with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768.
Why 5 lines? Well why would you need more? If you want to list your car specs, put them in the "about me" bit in your profile.

I don't think the forums will automatically update existing signatures, but they will prevent you from breaking those limits when you edit your sig. I'd like people to start editing their own sigs themselves manually.
I'll give it a short while then I'll start removing images from signatures that are too large.

So how big is 600 x 125? Well, this big:

As a quick comparison, my sig image has always been 450 x 120 pixels, and you shouldn't really need anything bigger than that.

And how do you edit your sig on the new forums?
  • Click the menu by your name, and choose "My Settings":

  • Then click on the "Profile" tab:

  • Then click on the "Change Signature" link and edit away:

...simple as that!

Good Job mike. Been waiting for this for a while now. :bounce:

I always keep my sigs the size of 500 x 150 because that's the size limits on other forums. But the reasons you presented make the size you said very viable. Good choice!

Edit: Changed Sig :D

You can resize the image in most of the online image hosting sites (photobucket etc)

I've been fiddling with the portal trying to work out how to re-align things.
The old version was table based, which is easy. The new version is css based, which... err... isn't.

It should be back to normal for the moment.
